Russell grew up around cars, trucks and farm machinery. With almost 34 years in the motor industry, he holds an A Grade motor mechanics certificate and a Queensland Advanced Trade Certificate, and is a Member of the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Before moving to the Vehicle Technologies department he held various roles within the RACQ, including Vehicle Inspector, Trainer, Publications Officer and Manager of Technical Advice.

For a number of years he has assisted with vehicle testing and has contributed to the RACQ's Road Ahead magazine and web site.

He has served on the Queensland committee of the Society of Automotive Engineers for the past seven years and is involved in vintage vehicle restoration.
