Volkswagen's new-generation Golf hatch makes the cut amid an exceptionally strong field, even getting the better of a noteworthy stablemate.

With its all-wheel-drive and 3.2-litre V6 engine, the successful new-generation R32 hatch is a sufficiently different performance model in the Golf range to demand attention in its own right within the sports car class.

And its depth of ability is such that it managed to unseat its stablemate, the Golf GTI, from the class winner's podium - no easy task. With its genetic link to the Golf GTI plus a sophisticated powertrain and engine, the R32 has the vital ingredients to be a superb driver's car. The 24-valve, double overhead cam-perbank V6 delivers claimed outputs of 184kW at 6300rpm and 320Nm at 2500-3000rpm.

With that rich vein of mid-range torque to tap into, the R32 is easy to drive no matter how hard or softly you want to play, and ultimately it's a quick car. What the numbers alone can't convey, though, is how smooth and responsive is this sweet and punchy V6. And the engine's note under acceleration is an extra pleasure for the driver.

Drive is delivered via a worthy, standard six-speed manual gearbox, or buyers can opt for the six-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox). The DSG provides the best of both worlds, with performance and convenience courtesy of its blindingly quick automated shifts, or the sportiness of manual shifts via the lever or steering wheel paddle shifters.

The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, with its Haldex coupling, ensures the R32 gets its power to the road without fuss, whatever the conditions. The R32 also shines for its excellent roadholding.

VW's engineers have done a good job of tuning the suspension and chassis to deliver well-balanced, responsive handling with lashings of grip, inspiring driver confidence. The steering has a meaty feel that's nicely linear and provides good feedback to the driver.

Ride comfort and smoothness, especially over rougher surfaces, is less pleasing though, and a chink in the R32's otherwise substantial armour. While not as cosseting as some, including its sibling the Golf GTI, it is less successful at loosening tooth fillings than rivals such as the rally-bred Evo IX Lancer.

The vented front and rear disc brakes provide plenty of bite and always feel reassuring - important given this level of performance this car offers.

As befits a car of this calibre and price, such safety features as anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution, brake assist, multiple airbags, traction and stability control and bi-xenon headlamps are standard.

Those looking for creature comforts are well catered for too, with standard offerings such as leather trim and climate control. The R32's security score is bolstered by the standard alarm and alloy wheel anti-theft lock bolts.

It differs little in body dimensions from other Golfs, and is available as either a five or three-door hatch. The VW's finish and quality of assembly looks good and is right up with the best in this category.

Seating that is firm, well shaped and supportive, along with a user-friendly cabin layout, means the R32 scores well for comfort and ergonomics.

VW has wrapped the R32 in subtly aggressive, stylish bodywork, with several distinctive features to delineate it from other Golf variants.
