Ford's Territory has claimed so much new ground in its formative years that The Blue Oval could have been overwhelmed.

Instead Ford's fortunes have risen as Australians take Territory to heart. The locally made product frequently tops 4x4 sales and the flagship Ghia now ranks as its best-selling all-paw product.

The SY version, released after Australia's Best Cars cut-off with an economical and advanced new gearbox, promises more next year.

For now though the versatile Territory absorbs a mighty price hike from TX to Ghia models without giving more affordable foes a look-in.

Changes in value for Ghia see it surrender a score in pricing before regaining momentum on standard features.

This Ford continues to shine for passenger, cargo and oddments space. And when practicality, seat comfort and driving position are rated Territory comes out on top.

Territory build quality and safety also ranks above average in this company.

Don't underestimate its driveability either.

Its controlled and comfortable ride is highly regarded and the levels of refinement reflect a longing for luxury status.

The 4.0-litre engine and smart sequential auto also combine efficiently to provide plenty of punch. Despite its bulk, handling and braking qualities are admirable.

As in 2004, Territory's fuel consumption, predicted depreciation costs and environment score are sore points.

Subaru's car-like off-roaders still occupy the high ground for handling and still cop a caning for running and repair costs.

A facelift for Forester this year picked up scores, principally in build quality and pricing. The additional scores make this outstanding, but small, recreational vehicle even better.

Forester is renowned for its on-road qualities and off-road prowess although there are stronger performers available. Consequently its fuel economy is lower than average.

The smaller Subaru also provides a high level of safety and security. Drivers of all sizes should easily adapt to the controls and supportive seats.

Outback cannot match its little brother on affordability or abilities off the road but brings additional comfort and refinement to the table.

It also resists thieves more effectively, presents a plush ride and repeats Forester's strong showing in ergonomics, finish, safety and fuel consumption.
