Holden Astra looked set to take its fourth successive crown when it was
pipped at the post.
For 2003, Australia's Best Mid-Size Car under $28,000 is Subaru Impreza GX
after a $2000 price reduction was announced on the Impreza range just
before the deadline for final ABC inclusion.
In a segment where vehicle purchase price is regarded as critical, it is
this that sees Impreza get in front of Astra by a very slim margin.
As with much of the Subaru product, Impreza rates high on retained value as
well as providing a good level of engine performance, road adhesion, finish
quality and standard features.
Much of Impreza's prowess in the handling department comes courtesy of its
all-wheel-drive system although, like other all-wheel-drive vehicles, this
can have an adverse effect on fuel economy. However, a combination of an
efficient engine and Subaru's expertise with all-wheel-drive technology has
allowed Impreza to return fuel economy that is at least average for the
class.
Holden Astra City is by no means disgraced. As in past years, it performs
consistently across all 19 judging criteria and only loses out to Impreza
on standard features and comfort. Performance and ride is equal to that of
the Subaru, as is handling, where Astra performs extremely well against its
all-wheel-drive rival.
Toyota Corolla Ascent made a determined effort to finish in the top three,
achieving average to above-average scores in 17 criteria.
