The Small Car category, although the least glamourous of the categories, is
one of the most important classes for consumers, as it represents more than
10% of all new cars sold in Australia.
It is also competitive, with one of the largest fields of any class. So
although small in size, the competition is a real clash of the sales titans
and each has a lot at stake.
These vehicles also make up the most accessible class of car, because of
their price. They are often the first brand new car many people own, so
value for money is very important to these buyers.
For a contender to win the category it needs to be both well-priced and
economical to run and repair.
Hyundai has won this category a couple of times before, and this year the
smallest of its range, the Getz, has come up with the right combination of
keen pricing and long warranty to win the day. It takes the win over both
its larger stablemate Hyundai Accent GL 3-door and the newcomer to the
category, Honda Jazz VTi.
Accent gets very close because of similar design and manufacturing
practices, but the lower price and running costs of the smaller Getz is a
factor.
Honda Jazz has slightly better design and function, which provides more
space and better ergonomics. It also had an edge with its performance on
the road, but as one of the dearest in the class these strong points are
not enough to beat the value of the Getz¹s overall package. Also as both the
Hyundais have five-year warranties, the peace of mind this gives adds
significantly to their strength in this class.
