This category has been re-named to better reflect the nature of vehicles competing and is set to grow in numbers next year, with new models to come from the likes of Volkswagen, Porsche and Volvo. But this hasn't worried last year's winner, BMW X5 3.0 litre.
X5 puts in a very solid on-road performance, scoring top marks for smoothness and quietness, and earning an above-average rating on performance, ride, handling and braking. Its off-road performance certainly isn't shabby either; in this criterion, it again rates above average.
Other areas where X5 scores an above-average rating include build and finish quality, occupant space and comfort, innovation, vehicle security and safety. Overall, X5 is a very pleasant vehicle to drive in all types of conditions.
The Audi Allroad is something of a surprise package and in particular the turbo diesel version launched this year. It stepped into second place with strong scoring across all areas.
Subaru's Outback H6 loses out on ground clearance, but makes up for that with its excellent chassis dynamics. The combination of full-time AWD, a lower centre of gravity and a well-sorted suspension gives Outback top marks for handling in this group. It is also well built, comfortable, ergonomically efficient and cheaper to own and operate than most of its competition.
