Subaru Forester is the great survivor as, along with Holden Astra, it is one of only two vehicles to have won their class in all three years of ABC.
Since last year, there's a new Forester with a raft of improvements. These range from a larger 2.5-litre engine for stronger performance, to greater structural strength, enhanced on-road capabilities and more standard equipment.
Recreational 4WDs aren't generally expected to be able to tackle the really rough stuff, but to its credit Forester (and also Nissan X-Trail) kept up during the gruelling off-road testing with some of those fighting it out for the All-Terrain category. This was mainly due to the control offered by Subaru's constant AWD, dual-range transmission (manual versions) and limited slip rear differential.
However it was eventually Forester's almost car-like handling, its comfortable ride on the bitumen and its overall quietness that made it the ideal recreational vehicle. Forester provides the best combination of city manners and country capabilities. These attributes, along with the Forester's best-in-category levels of standard features, gave it the award.
The good-looking new Honda CRV was a worthy runner-up. It scored well on comfort, space, innovation, practicality, performance, smoothness and quietness, and build quality. But it lost ground to Forester in the areas of security, off-road ability and standard features.
