For a vehicle manufacturer who wants to be a winner in this class, it's important to get the correct balance between value, function and performance.

Toyota has done that with Avensis Verso GLX, a newcomer that took the crown with its performance and economy, as well as a smart cabin package.

Just as important as value for money in this segment is the need for a vehicle to be spacious, practical and easy to use, and it is in these areas where this year's winner had the goods.

Avensis has good and practical design features such as child restraint anchor points that were easy to access yet the smarter design meant that the restraint straps did not intrude into occupant space.

It also had an adjustable centre seat to accommodate the individual needs of passengers. The good headroom in the front and centre rows and acceptable rear seat space also helped make Avensis an accommodating package.

On the road there was little overall difference between the top contenders, as they each delivered their own combination of performance. But not even the good build quality and features of Honda Odyssey, nor the generally balanced package of Mitsubishi Nimbus, were enough to stop them being pushed back to third and fourth spot.

Holden Zafira presented the best value for money package of the group but slipped in the critically weighted design and function areas. Overall it was Avensis that had this year's winning recipe.
