The crown that Holden Astra has worn for the past two years as Australia's Best Mid-Size Car under $25,000 was under threat in 2002. It faced an onslaught of seven new or substantially revised models including Focus (Ford's replacement for Laser) and the highly acclaimed Toyota Corolla.
That the same-model Astra took out its third award in three years is a credit to its overall package, but it was a very tight finish indeed, with just 0.03 points separating it from Focus. In fact the pair received identical scores in 13 of the 19 criteria.
Astra is a comfortable, solidly constructed car that scores above average in the important area of safety and gets top marks for security. In the final analysis, though, it was Astra's overall on-road ability that tipped the scales. Strong, flexible performance, together with an outstanding ride, handling and braking package, is topped off by class-leading smoothness and quietness.
Focus scored well in value for money and was able to match Astra in quite a number of areas, but unfortunately it was let down by its below-average performance.
In the case of Corolla, this all-new model rose a creditable seven places on the Australia's Best Cars scoresheet for 2002 compared with the model it superseded this time last year. Like the two cars that finished ahead of it, Corolla scored strongly across all sections, but its score was hurt by a below-average mark for standard features.
