In what proved to be one of the tightest contests in 2002, the new Mazda6 Classic came up trumps. Mazda has tended to be the bridesmaid in recent years, but with its 6, it has delivered a good-value, well-designed car which is also a pleasure to drive.
The secret to the Mazda's win was consistency. Of the 19 criteria rated, it achieved the best possible 5s in two areas, and above-average 4s in another 12. It did not return a below-average score in any area.
Ergonomically, the car is a delight. A thoughtful, smart and user-friendly cabin, comfortable seats, good use of space, and solid build quality combine for a good overall score for design and function, especially in innovation.
For a four-cylinder auto, Mazda6 has a great feel on the road, for which it scored a bag of straight 4s. Even in standard mode, the auto is responsive and the engine willing and refined across the rev range.
Mazda6 also offers a well-balanced ride and handling package. It is also a quiet and smooth vehicle to drive, with commendable road manners.
It was a close run thing, though. Last year's winner, Subaru Liberty RX achieved best possible scores in six criteria. But its main bugbear was running and repair costs, and it also couldn't match Mazda on pricing, fuel consumption or security.
Also just a fraction behind was Toyota's new 2.4-litre Camry Altise. The Camry scored best in class for running and repair costs and space, but it lost ground in standard features and fuel consumption.
