It was a short-lived reign for BMW 530i as the best luxury car over $57,000, the previously dominant Mercedes Benz E320 producing a new model to reclaim the title for 2002.
A consistent rather than dominant performance got the Benz over the line. It picked up five top scores in the 19 categories but so did the BMW. Yet the reinvigorated E320 gained enough 4s and 5s in total to edge out the significantly improved Lexus LS430, leaving the 2001 winner in third spot.
Maximum marks were awarded to the Benz (and others) for safety, comfort, ergonomics, handling and braking. The new E320, introduced only a few months ago, included a raft of new features, but unusually, the price of the car came down by a few thousand dollars, which did it no harm at all.
For a large car, the Benz performs, rides, handles and stops with aplomb while offering its occupants appropriate levels of comfort and luxury.
The new Lexus won respect and several top scores. If not for relatively low scores in other areas, the big Lexus, considered by many to be the most cosseting and 'limo-like' of the contenders, may have been a step higher on the podium.
The BMW matched the Benz's maximum scores in braking and handling, mirrored others for comfort, ergonomics and safety, and scored best in pricing and running costs. But it slipped down the rankings with lower scores in warranty, space and standard equipment.
