The quality of competition in this class improves each year and this is reflected in the close scores. Buyers in this category are price-conscious, and in recent years small car sales have been dominated by budget offerings. But there are other considerations.
At $19,990, Clio Expression is not in the budget race but offers good value with a long list of features and safety equipment as well as excellent on-road dynamics. It has charisma and is fun to drive.
Clio brings a combination of primary and secondary safety features to the class, including driver and front passenger side airbags, ABS with electronic brake distribution, emergency brake assist and seatbelt pretensioners on outer rear seats as well as the front. Not all these features are exclusive to Clio but no other car in the class has the lot.
Front seat comfort and support is top-class and the 5-door configuration is an advantage. Clio, however, is a small car and adults will find rear space very tight.
Strong small car performance and respectable fuel economy is delivered by a 1.4-litre 16-valve engine, but it is the superb European-style ride and handling package that stands out. Precise steering as well as good brakes give Clio a clear lead in on-road ability. Add to this the class-leading votes for design and function, and Clio makes up for what it loses on price.
The main strength of the Hyundai is in its value for money, with an outstanding five year warranty and low costs in running and repairs. Holden Barina, on the other hand, scores by being a consistent performer across all judging criteria.
