The inclusion of four new contenders provided the foundation for a toughly fought battle in this category.
The likes of Daewoo Tecuma, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Nissan Pulsar Hatch stepped up the challenge, with Elantra and Pulsar posing up the biggest threat to last year's winner Holden Astra.
Hyundai Elantra GL, which finished this contest not far off the pace in second place, rates high in value for money, with price and warranty being it's strong points.
Also in Elantra's favour are vehicle security, space and practicality and ride quality. However, the Hyundai falls short in terms of running and repair costs, innovation, safety, build and finish quality, fuel efficency, handling and steering, braking, and smoothness/quietness.
Close on the heels of the Hyundai is the Nissan Pulsar ST Hatch, which to its credit scores consistently in 13 of the 18 judging criteria. Its strengths are pricing, standard features and ergonomics. However, space and practicality rate below average in its class.
But despite the challenge provided by new competitors in this field, Holden Astra City still puts in a strong performance, to repeat its victory in 2000 Australia's Best Cars.
Astra scores maximum points in two criteria - handling and steering, and smoothness and quietness - while achieving nine above average scores. Included among the latter are price and safety - both of which are deemed of critical importance by new car buyers. Additionally, running/repair costs, fuel efficiency and braking - regarded by buyers as being of high importance - score above average in each instance.
Unlike its competitors, Astra did not register a below average score in any area. However, in criteria that buyers consider being of high importance, such as warranty, standard features and ergonomics, Astra rates only average.
