The Subaru Liberty RX faced some fresh competition this year, particularly from the new Alfa Romeo 147 and Honda's new Civic Vi. However, not only did the Liberty withstand the onslaught from these two and the rest of the competition, it pulled further ahead of the pack, thanks to a range of improvements introduced in the 2002 model-year versions.

Cosmetic changes to the latest Liberties include new headlights, restyled bumpers and alloy bonnet, while on the inside there are new trims and dual tripmeters. Engine changes are claimed to improve efficiency, and the manual transmission gets a dual mass flywheel for smoother power delivery. The rear subframe has been strengthened with additional supports and the rear suspension revised for (even) better handling.

Runner up to Liberty in this class is its Subaru stablemate Impreza GX, while Civic Vi and Alfa 147 come in equal third.

In rating the Liberty, judges give it an above-the-class-average score on 14 of the 18 criteria. Ride comfort, handling and steering, braking, smoothness and quietness, build and finish quality, and standard features, all score maximum points. Warranty, retained value, ergonomics, innovation, safety, space and practicality, and performance all rate above average.

Liberty was rated average for its fuel efficiency and its theft security, while only pricing and running and repair costs were deemed to be below average for its class.

All in all, Subaru Liberty RX is a highly appealing package. You get a very comfortable, practical and highly versatile vehicle with build quality and engineering standards that match many more expensive vehicles.

The RX version comes with an attractive equipment package that includes the more powerful 2.5 litre engine, all-wheel-drive, dual airbags, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, climate-control air-conditioning and remote central locking.
