In this class, six Europeans lined up against a single Japanese entry, the Honda S2000.

There were two Porsches (the Boxster S and the 911 Carrera), two BMWs (the new 330Ci coupe and the M5 sedan) plus the Audi TT quattro and the Mercedes-Benz SLK320.

For the S2000 to triumph over this high quality group is great testimony to its ability to provide immense driving pleasure for the enthusiast. The bonus is that it comes at a much lower price than the European cars.

Categories in which the S2000 scored maximum points included performance, fuel efficiency, handling and steering, and braking. Although the S2000 has a snug cockpit, everything is well-placed and easy to use. The S2000's six-speed close-ratio manual gearbox has the best gearchange you'll find in any sports car, bar none.

Though the S2000 is essentially a no-compromise sports car, it does come with a good range of standard equipment that includes dual airbags, anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, electrically-operated hood, alloy wheels, a six-stack CD player, remote central locking, an immobiliser and power operated windows and mirrors.

In short, the Honda S2000 is a great little sports car that just begs to be driven. Its heart is a high-revving 2.0 litre four cylinder engine that produces an amazing 176 kW of power. One of the S2000's strengths is that even if you never fully extend the car, it is lively enough around town at normal engine speeds, and is quite pleasant to drive, apart from a rather firm ride. The steering and handling are pin sharp, characterised by exceptional responsiveness and agility.

The real joy when driving an S2000 though is to hear it scream as the revs rise to 7000 rpm, then look at the tachometer (a digital bar affair rather than the traditional analogue dial, unfortunately) and see that you still have another couple of thousand left to play with.
