Buyers in the market for a new mid-size car under $25,000 have plenty of choices, from many parts of the world ,including Japan, Europe, USA, Korea and Malaysia. Unfortunately, we no longer build small cars in this country - when the last home grown Toyota Corolla rolled down the Altona, Melbourne production line in 1999, this era ended.

After a hard year's roadtesting, the big field was narrowed down to three finalists; the Nissan Pulsar ST, Subaru Impreza and Holden Astra.

Value for money pricing, low fuel consumption and a feature packed list of standard equipment continue to be major attractions of the Pulsar, while the new model sedan now boasts a higher level of security, and driver friendly ergonomics make it an easy car to drive.

While you pay a little more for the technology and safety of the Impreza, it retains excellent value on the used car market. Subaru's all-wheel-drive configuration is an innovative approach in this class and delivers surefooted grip, particularly on wet or slippery roads.

In the end though, Astra came out as a clear winner, scoring above average marks in eleven of the eighteen sections. The battle between Pulsar and Impreza was closely fought with the Impreza just edging out Pulsar for second place.

The Astra is well priced, economical in running and repair costs, delivers a high level of build quality and also scores well on safety.

On the road, though, is where it really stands out from the rest. The European chassis, steering and suspension set up has been fine tuned by Holden engineers to suit local conditions and with strong performance and class leading refinement from its 1.8 litre four cylinder engine, it is responsive and rewarding to drive.

The award goes to both Astra variants - the five door hatchback and four door sedan - while both standard equipment levels - City and CD - are priced under $25,000.
